In this guide 9 sections
If you have ever wanted to put Mickey Mouse, Elsa and Captain Hook in the same battle, Disney Lorcana is the card game for you. Published by Ravensburger, it launched in 2023 and has grown into a long-running series of sets packed with heroes, villains and sidekicks. This guide explains the rules in plain English, lists every set so far and shows what each box contains.

What is Disney Lorcana?
In the story of the game, you are an Illumineer in the magical realm of Lorcana. You use magical ink to summon new versions of Disney characters, items and locations, and these summoned versions are called glimmers. Each game is a race between Illumineers to collect lore, a measure of how much of the realm’s story you have uncovered.
The winning target is simple to remember: the first player to reach 20 lore wins. There are no life points to whittle down. Instead you gain lore by sending characters on quests, and you slow your opponent by challenging and banishing theirs. That focus on racing rather than pure combat is what makes the game feel different from older trading card games.
Six inks and the deck rules
Every card belongs to one of six inks: Amber, Amethyst, Emerald, Ruby, Sapphire and Steel. A deck can use cards from one or two inks, so part of the fun is finding a pairing that suits how you like to play. The other deck-building rules are short:
- At least 60 cards in your deck.
- No more than four copies of any single card.
- Cards from no more than two inks.
Pre-built starter decks already follow these rules and pair two inks for you, which is why they are the easiest way into Disney Lorcana. Our Disney Lorcana range includes booster boxes from across the series if you want to expand from there.
How a turn works
Each player draws seven cards to start and may put any number on the bottom of the deck once to draw back up to seven. After that, every turn follows the same pattern:
- Ready, set, draw. Ready your exerted cards, resolve start-of-turn effects and draw a card.
- Ink a card. Once per turn you may put a card from your hand face down into your inkwell. Only inkable cards, marked by the swirl around their cost, can be used this way.
- Play cards. Exert ink from your inkwell equal to a card’s cost to play it.
- Quest. Exert a dry character to gain lore equal to its Lore value.
- Challenge. Exert a dry character to challenge an exerted opposing character. Each deals damage equal to its Strength, and a character is banished when its damage reaches its Willpower.
New characters cannot quest or challenge on the turn they are played, because you have to wait for their ink to dry. Deciding which cards to ink and which to keep in hand is the first real skill you will learn, and the official Lorcana tips suggest checking every card’s inkability before it goes in your deck.
The four card types
- Characters quest for lore and challenge rivals. They show Strength, Willpower and Lore values.
- Actions are one-off effects. Songs are a special kind of action: a character with a high enough cost can exert to sing one for free instead of you paying ink.
- Items stay in play and give ongoing abilities.
- Locations give you lore at the start of your turn, and you can pay a location’s move cost to send characters there.
Some characters add a twist. A Floodborn character with Shift can be played on top of a character with the same name already in play by paying its Shift cost, keeping any damage the original had. Our guide to Disney characters in Lorcana looks at how famous faces appear across the sets.

Spotlight: Whispers in the Well
Ravensburger confirmed Whispers in the Well as the tenth Lorcana set. It reached game stores for prerelease on 7 November 2025 and went on wide release on 14 November 2025. The set has a detective-mystery theme, debuts characters from Gargoyles and adds Whispers, a new kind of glimmer summoned from torn Lorebook pages, along with the Boost mechanic that places cards from your deck beneath a Whisper. A Whispers in the Well booster box holds 24 packs from the set.
Rarities to know
The core rarities are Common, Uncommon, Rare, Super Rare, Legendary and Enchanted. Enchanted cards use full-art alternative artwork with a special foil, and The First Chapter had 12 of them. Fabled added two more tiers: Epic, which sits between Legendary and Enchanted, and Iconic, the rarest cards in a set.
Booster packs, boxes and troves
A Disney Lorcana booster pack contains 12 random cards. Ravensburger lists the mix as six commons, three uncommons, two cards of Rare or higher and one foil card. A booster box holds 24 packs, or 288 cards, which is plenty for building decks in two inks or working towards a full set.
Our The First Chapter Booster Box is where the story starts, and the Rise of the Floodborn Booster Box covers the second chapter, in which characters swept up in a flood are transformed in surprising ways. For a later chapter, the Reign of Jafar Booster Box holds 24 packs from the set where a Jafar glimmer takes over Archazia’s Island.
Two other products are useful to know. Each Illumineer’s Trove contains eight booster packs with a storage box, a lore counter and damage dice, so it suits collectors who want packs plus storage. Starter decks give you a ready-to-play 60-card deck with a bonus booster pack.
How to start playing
Begin with a two-ink starter deck and play a few games against a friend using the official quick start rules. Once questing and challenging feel natural, open packs from a set whose films you love and swap in cards one at a time. Keep an eye on inkable cards as you build, because a hand you can’t ink is a hand you can’t use.
When you are ready for an evening with other players, local game stores run Lorcana events for newcomers and regulars alike. The official site also hosts a short how-to-play video series, which pairs nicely with the quick start rulebook (PDF).
