One Piece Odyssey: 4 Great Ways From the RPG to the Card Game

Loved the Straw Hats' adventure on Waford? Here is what the RPG is about, which cards feature Lim and Adio, and how to get into the One Piece Card Game.

In this guide 7 sections

One Piece Odyssey gave the Straw Hat Crew an original adventure built with direct input from series creator Eiichiro Oda, revisiting some of the series’ best-known arcs along the way. If you finished the game and want more time with Luffy and friends, the One Piece Card Game is a natural next step. This guide covers the RPG first, then the cards.

One Piece Odyssey at a glance

  • Release: 13 January 2023 on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC via Steam (12 January in Japan).
  • Nintendo Switch: the Deluxe Edition followed on 26 July 2024.
  • Developer and publisher: developed by ILCA, published by Bandai Namco Entertainment.
  • Genre: a single-player, turn-based role-playing game.
  • Music: scored by composer Motoi Sakuraba.
  • Creator involvement: Oda contributed to the main plot and created new characters and monster designs, including Lim and Adio.

The story: Waford, Lim and Adio

A storm at sea wrecks the Thousand Sunny and strands the crew on Waford, a lush but mysterious island ringed by constant storms. The Straw Hats are scattered, and Luffy sets out to find his friends and a way off the island. Along the way they meet two of the island’s human inhabitants, a girl named Lim and an explorer named Adio.

Lim harbours a deep hatred of pirates, and she has a striking power: when she touches someone, she can turn their skills into cubes. Once that happens, the original owner loses those skills and becomes weaker, which is exactly what happens to the crew early in One Piece Odyssey. Adio, a parental figure to Lim, ate the Grab-Grab Fruit and knows the island’s layout, so he becomes the crew’s guide.

Both characters were created by Oda for One Piece Odyssey, and he also designed new creatures for Waford, such as the Leviathan and the Dry Penguin. Those designs give Waford a look and personality all of its own.

Memoria and the memory arcs

To win back their lost abilities, the crew travels through Memoria, a world built from the Straw Hats’ memories of past adventures. One Piece Odyssey revisits four famous arcs with dramatic twists: Alabasta, Water Seven, Marineford, where Luffy returns to the battle to save Ace with his crew beside him, and Dressrosa, where Sabo and Trafalgar Law join the fight against Doflamingo.

Battles and extra content

Combat uses classic turn-based commands on a battlefield split into separate areas, so positioning matters, and you can play as every member of the crew. Dramatic Scenes can throw a battle off course with surprise objectives, and random sub-objectives reward extra experience for clever play. After the credits, the Reunion of Memories scenario adds more story, and it comes bundled in the Switch Deluxe Edition with outfit sets including the City of Water Outfit Set.

From Waford to the tabletop

The One Piece Card Game from Bandai launched in English on 2 December 2022 with Romance Dawn [OP-01], a set of 121 card types designed to power up the starter decks, adding multicolour Leader cards, alternate-art parallel cards and box topper cards. So the English card game is actually slightly older than One Piece Odyssey, and the two grew up side by side.

The core rules are quick to learn:

  • You build around one Leader card and a 50-card deck that matches the Leader’s colour, with up to four copies of any card number.
  • A separate DON!! deck of exactly 10 cards pays costs and powers up your Leader and Characters.
  • Your Life cards come from the top of your deck, equal to your Leader’s Life value.
  • You win by landing a successful attack on the opposing Leader when they have no Life cards left, or if your opponent runs out of cards in their deck.

Card types are Leader, Character, Event, Stage and DON!!. The official play guide explains each step with pictures, and a Teaching App lets you try a Starter Deck before you buy anything.

Where One Piece Odyssey meets the card game

Fans of the RPG have a direct link into the card game. Bandai’s page for Emperors in the New World [OP-09], released in English in December 2024, confirms that characters from One Piece Odyssey join the set. Lim appears as a Green/Purple Leader (OP09-022) and as a Character (OP09-037), Adio arrives as a Super Rare Character (OP09-023), and a group of cards carries the ODYSSEY type.

The official Lim deck feature describes a deck filled with ODYSSEY-type Characters from across the series, including Odyssey versions of Sanji and Donquixote Doflamingo. That is about as close as the cardboard gets to recreating your One Piece Odyssey party, and the Emperors in the New World OP-09 Booster Box is where those cards live.

Because a deck must match its Leader’s colour, a Green/Purple Lim Leader lets you mix green and purple cards in one deck. That gives One Piece Odyssey fans a good reason to explore the wider card pool, and the Odyssey cards share OP-09 with the New Four Emperors.

4 ways into the card game for One Piece Odyssey fans

  1. Build around Lim. Start with the OP-09 Lim Leader and the ODYSSEY-type cards so your first deck feels like a page out of One Piece Odyssey.
  2. Go back to the early sets. The Paramount War OP-02 Booster Box comes from the game’s second set and brings in the Whitebeard Pirates and the three Admirals from the Paramount War.
  3. Follow the story forward. 500 Years in the Future [OP-07], released on 28 June 2024, focuses on the Egghead Arc, well beyond the memory arcs in the RPG.
  4. Get the gear. The English 2nd Anniversary Set, a Premium Bandai release delivered from June 2025, contains a playmat, four Leader cards, four Character cards, ten DON!! cards and a storage box themed on the New Four Emperors.

Whichever route you take, protect your favourite pulls from day one. The sleeving and storage advice in our beginner’s guide to trading cards applies just as well to One Piece cards, and it explains how booster packs, boxes and collections differ.
