In this guide 8 sections

Searching for a Mega Evolutions booster box? The Mega Evolution series of the Pokémon TCG began in English on 26 September 2025, and it now spans five English booster boxes and seven Japanese ones. This guide lines them all up: what each box contains, which Mega Pokémon ex headlines it, how English and Japanese boxes differ, and which special sets don’t have a box at all.

Pokémon TCG: Mega Evolution—Chaos Rising Booster Box

If you are still getting to grips with the mechanic itself, our Mega Evolution guide covers how Mega Pokémon ex work and why they give up three Prize cards when Knocked Out. Here we stick to sealed boxes.

What counts as a Mega Evolutions booster box?

A booster box is a sealed display of booster packs from a single set. In this series there are three formats you will come across:

  • English main sets: 36 packs, each with 10 cards and 1 Basic Energy.
  • Japanese expansion packs: 30 packs of 5 cards.
  • Japanese high class pack (Mega Dream ex): 10 packs of 10 cards.

So an English Mega Evolutions booster box holds 360 set cards plus 36 Basic Energy, while a standard Japanese box holds 150 cards. Special sets are the exception: neither Ascended Heroes nor 30th Celebration has an English booster box, as explained further down.

The five English boxes

Each English Mega Evolutions booster box comes from a main expansion, and each set has its own headline Mega ex and a Mega Hyper Rare at the very end of its numbering. Here they are in release order.

The base set (ME01)

The original Mega Evolution set released on 26 September 2025 with 188 cards, the biggest of the five boxed sets. It has ten Mega Pokémon ex, and Mega Lucario ex and Mega Gardevoir ex lead the way, each with a Mega Hyper Rare (188 and 187). There was also an Enhanced Booster Display Box, which Bulbapedia notes included a Mega Evolution-stamped Bulbasaur Illustration Rare (133/132) as a box topper. A full-sized set is a big ask to complete, so this Mega Evolutions booster box suits patient collectors.

Phantasmal Flames (ME02)

Released on 14 November 2025 with 130 cards, Phantasmal Flames is the Mega Charizard X ex set, with a Special Illustration Rare at 125 and the Mega Hyper Rare at 130. Mega Gengar ex co-stars among six Mega Pokémon ex. The Phantasmal Flames Booster Box is the go-to Mega Evolutions booster box for Charizard fans.

Perfect Order (ME03)

Perfect Order arrived on 27 March 2026 with 124 cards and four new Mega ex: Mega Zygarde ex, Mega Clefable ex, Mega Starmie ex and Mega Skarmory ex. Mega Zygarde ex takes the Mega Hyper Rare slot at 124, making this the Mega Evolutions booster box for Zygarde fans. See the Perfect Order Booster Box or our Perfect Order booster box guide for the details.

Chaos Rising (ME04)

Chaos Rising released on 22 May 2026 with 122 cards. Mega Greninja ex is the mascot (Special Illustration Rare 116, Mega Hyper Rare 122) and Mega Floette ex is cast as the villain, with five Mega ex in total. The Chaos Rising Booster Box, pictured above, was the fourth English Mega Evolutions booster box.

Pitch Black (ME05)

Pitch Black, released on 17 July 2026, is the smallest boxed set so far at 120 cards. Mega Darkrai ex headlines (Special Illustration Rare 116, Mega Hyper Rare 120), Mega Zeraora ex co-leads, and there are six Mega ex in all. The Pitch Black Booster Box is the newest Mega Evolutions booster box in English.

Special sets without an English booster box

Two sets in the series are special expansions, and their English packs come inside other products instead of a 36-pack display.

Ascended Heroes (30 January 2026, 295 cards) is the largest English expansion so far. The official reveal, reported by PokéGuardian, stated that its booster packs would not be sold in traditional booster boxes, so they appear in Elite Trainer Boxes, a six-pack Booster Bundle, collections and tins. If you want a box-style opening for those cards, the Japanese Mega Dream ex box (below) is the closest match.

30th Celebration (16 September 2026) is the anniversary special expansion. Its official English line-up is built around Elite Trainer Boxes, collections, tins and a Booster Bundle, with no traditional booster box. Its packs also differ: five foil cards and a foil Basic Energy, with one of 30 Pikachu cards in every pack. So there is no English 30th Celebration entry in any Mega Evolutions booster box comparison.

The Japanese Mega Evolutions booster box line-up

Japanese sets release earlier and come in smaller boxes. Every standard Japanese Mega Evolutions booster box below holds 30 packs of 5 cards, according to Bulbapedia’s set pages, with Mega Dream ex the one exception.

  • Mega Brave (M1L) and Mega Symphonia (M1S): released together on 1 August 2025. Mega Lucario ex leads Mega Brave and Mega Gardevoir ex leads Mega Symphonia. Most of their cards went into the English Mega Evolution set.
  • Inferno X (M2): 26 September 2025, starring Mega Charizard X ex. Its cards went into Phantasmal Flames.
  • Mega Dream ex (M2a): 28 November 2025. A 250-card high class pack with 10 cards per pack and 10 packs per box, featuring Mega Dragonite ex. Its cards went into Ascended Heroes.
  • Munikis Zero (M3), which we list as Nullifying Zero: 23 January 2026, led by Mega Zygarde ex. Its cards went into Perfect Order.
  • Ninja Spinner (M4): 13 March 2026, led by Mega Greninja ex. Its cards went into Chaos Rising.
  • Abyss Eye (M5): 22 May 2026, led by Mega Darkrai ex. Its cards went into Pitch Black.

The official Pokémon Card Game page for Mega Dream ex confirms 10 cards per pack, double the count of a standard Japanese pack, so each pack is a bigger open even though the box holds fewer packs.

English or Japanese: how to choose

Both formats have fans, and the right Mega Evolutions booster box depends on what you want from the opening.

  • Cards per box: 360 in an English box (plus 36 Basic Energy), 150 in a standard Japanese box, 100 in Mega Dream ex.
  • Language and numbering: Japanese cards are printed in Japanese and numbered differently, so they won’t fill an English binder.
  • Timing: Japanese sets launch months ahead. Inferno X came out on 26 September 2025, about seven weeks before Phantasmal Flames.
  • Set structure: two Japanese sets can feed one English set, as Mega Brave and Mega Symphonia did for the base set.

If you want to build an English master set, an English Mega Evolutions booster box is the practical choice. If you enjoy a quicker open, Japanese card stock and artwork, a Japanese Mega Evolutions booster box is a great alternative.

Choosing a Mega Evolutions booster box by favourite Mega

Many collectors pick a box by the Pokémon they love most. A quick guide:

  • Mega Lucario ex or Mega Gardevoir ex: the English base set, or Mega Brave and Mega Symphonia in Japanese.
  • Mega Charizard X ex: Phantasmal Flames, or Inferno X in Japanese.
  • Mega Dragonite ex: Mega Dream ex, since Ascended Heroes has no English box.
  • Mega Zygarde ex: Perfect Order, or Munikis Zero in Japanese.
  • Mega Greninja ex: Chaos Rising, or Ninja Spinner in Japanese.
  • Mega Darkrai ex: Pitch Black, or Abyss Eye in Japanese.

Set size matters too. A smaller set such as Pitch Black (120 cards) or Chaos Rising (122) is easier to complete from a single Mega Evolutions booster box than the 188-card base set.
